Shot in the Dark
Images taken in near or total darkness – darkness so complete that I often couldn’t see the subjects as I photographed them. The camera captured light too low to be seen by the eye, creating painterly, ethereal photographs nestled between representation and abstraction. Shutter speeds used were long – often several seconds – resulting in irreproducible, serendipitous, ephemeral images which often evoke Pictorialist and Spirit photographs of the 19th century.
